Big Data Demystified How Big Data Is Changing The Way We Live Love And Learn eBook David Feinleib
I'm a data analyst for a few companies and organizations. I'm also in school to become a data scientist (very similar, but "scientist" gets paid more than "analyst" :-D ), so I've been gobbling up as many books on big data and data crunching as I possible can. Quite a few of the books out there are disappointments, clearly trying to ride aboard the "big data" buzz word that is currently popular. But this book was different. It's an exceptionally good introduction to big data. Don't expect to see a whole lot of deep, technical detail in this book. They're not there. But if you just want to grasp the concept of big data, this would be the book I'd recommend you purchase. Usually books are overpriced or priced just right. In the case of "Big Data Demystified" the book is actually worth way more than the $2.99 I paid to read it on my Kindle.

Complex topic made easy to understand.
The worthwhile content in this book is probably 8-10 pages. The rest 180 pages are elaborations of that to give it a shape of a book.
Big Data Demystified does just that, demystifies big data. David provides real world and pragmatic advice to better understand the value and impact that Big Data has in both our personal and professional lives. A must read for those looking for insights beyond the hype.
There's some good content here in terms of the basics of Big Data. The author tends to go on tangents about related subject areas. But, in general, the book lives up to its title.
If you are new to Big Data but want it to be explained to you in a simple yet highly engaging way, this is the book to read. I really like how David uses tons of real case studies/companies as examples. It was pretty neat to read about what info people typically lie about on OkCupid, or what considerations Match.com take into account when recommending matches. And how Facebook is at its core, a big data company. These examples help establish a good foundation around what Big Data is, why we should care, how companies use it (ex see that button on ? Think it is there randomly? Think again!). David also talks about new frontiers in Big Data that when figured out, will be GAME CHANGING. Very cool to know and keep an eye out for.
The book is a simple read -- great for airplane rides or a free Sunday afternoon. I wanted to finish reading this right before the Big Data Conference this week in SF, so I'd have some working knowledge of what people are talking about when they say "Hadoop." If you are having a hard time choosing an intro book on Big Data, I would highly recommend this book. Very well written, simple to understand, and it is filled with relevant examples, making it very interesting to read.
