This book was about on a part with the other two books in the series, and my comments on them carry over to this one.The story seems to jump ahead in spots as if Black knew how her characters got from point A to point B, but forgot to tell us.
The revelation of the bad guy seemed to come out of nowhere. There were no clues throughout the book to this point that might point to the guilty one, although this time, I had a suspicion who it was.
I read the third book in this series before I read this one and some of the things mentioned there left me a bit at sea. I hoped this book might clear some of them up but I may have to go back and re-read that third book to see if I’m right.
The story itself was interesting – a newlywed couple shotgunned to death in their tent. Is their murder an act of revenge, jealousy, or does it have something to do with the act an ecoterror group is planning? That Laura Cardinal, the main character, was involved in trying to solve both the murder and the ecoterrorist plot is a realistic portrayal of real police work. There’s never only one open case on an officer’s plate.
J. Carson Black remains on my ‘to read’ list but still only in a fallback position.

Four and a half stars. When I read DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, I was happy. A new character, a new investigator and a woman all came out great for the read. In book two of the Laura Cardinal series, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON there is no sophomore let down. This is a good story with detailed characters and emotion you can sink your teeth into. J. Carson Black is a good writer, try this series. In this edition Cardinal, an investigator for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, is sent to lead a murder investigation that shows use the dark side of love. Cardinal is a great character, smart yet vulnerable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
When Dark Side of the Moon opens, Laura's world is undergoing change -- change she doesn't want, doesn't understand, and doesn't know how to stop. Laura and her insecurities are balanced by her aptitude for her job. In a "ripped from the headlines" story, Laura faces what everyone fears since 9/11.
By book's end, you'll be surprised and saddened, for the other characters and for Laura. You'll also be thoroughly hooked into buying the other books in the series.
Senseless tragedy and cunning evil characterizes this second book in the Laura Cardinal Series, and it will keep you turning the pages.
I got an iPad for Christmas. Two minutes later I had 4iPad and 4PC installed on both platforms. Fortune smiled that day and guided me to the location of "Darkness at the Edge of Town" (5 stars--my opinion) by J Carson Black. I followed that book with this title "Dark Side of The Moon" (4.795 stars rounded up) and the "The Devils Hour" (4.787 stars rounded of course). In my dotage, I find I have fallen for Laura Cardinal. I'm in love. It hurts having to wait to see her again. I keep a candle in the window.
Read "The Shop", too. This title is a non-Laura Cardinal mystery/thriller. Don't be troubled. The heroine, Jolie Burke, is easy to like. (4.65 rounded stars).
Next up is Black's earlier novel "Darkscope".
Talismans for our age in general and us readers in particular the for iPad and J Carson Black. The old Buddhist said, "Be here now." I'm trying.
I really enjoy this author and her character, Laura Cardinal. I love series with recurring characters and complicated story lines, and these books are among those I intend to continue to purchase and read. However, I was constantly disturbed throughout this book by fragment sentences. I would often have to go back and re-read the sentence to see if I missed something. I didn't. J. Carson Black uses fragment sentences like making a list, usually descriptive of a scene. It's bad writing, bad grammar, and a good editor should make it clear that using fragment sentences is not a writing style - it's just annoying. I will consider dropping the series from my list of must-reads if the 3rd book is as lacking in flow as the 2nd. When a reader suddenly realizes that she is reading, she is pulled from the story.
I loved the first book in the series, but was disappointed in this one. I was much less interested in the story itself (a case of ecoterrorism) and the characters were not appealing. There are several different storylines going on at once, which makes it confusing and overly complicated. In the "main" storyline, a group steals some nuclear waste and threatens to release it. Then there is the story line with the two dead campers, the sick child, and Laura's live-in boyfriend who may or may not be cheating/breaking up with her. At some point, the storylines intersect/overlap.
The biggest problem in this series is characterization. Characters (including Laura) tell you what they think, feel, like, etc. rather than allowing you to discover those facts for yourself. Most characters are presented in very two-dimensional terms. I didn't care about the sick child because we met her like twice in the story, and she made no impact in those scenes. The same with the whole subplot about her boyfriend -- we didn't meet him until the very end, so I didn't know if he still loved her or not, and after hearing her whine about not being able to reach him through half a dozen chapters, I didn't even care anymore. I think this could have worked with flashbacks to other times when they did things together, or alternating with chapters from his point of view, or something. It is difficult to care what happens in the story, when none of the characters are emotionally appealing. The author has some really good plot ideas, so I hope she can work on the characters a little more and then these would be five star novels.
